EXPOSOME MAPS
Here we provide an overview of External Exposome data that has been inventoried by the Exposome-NL and EXPANSE projects and that have been used in epidemiological studies conducted by these projects. For background information on our conceptualization of the exposome and the categorization into four dimensions, please read these openly accessible publications:

Exposome surfaces
The Exposome Maps contain geospatially resolved data on environmental exposures (Exposome Surfaces), categorized into the following Exposome dimensions:
Built Environment28 exposures related to:
- Green space
- Blue space
- Grey space
Food Environment4 exposures related to:
- Food landscape / healthy food index
Physico-Chemical Environment99 exposures related to:
- Air pollution
- Biodiversity
- Weather conditions
- Light intensity at night
- Noise
- Pesticides
- Electromagnetic fields
Social Environment70 exposures related to:
- Neighbourhood socio-economic position
- Neighbourhood Demographic surfaces and population characteristics
- Social capital
- Security
- Mental health
- Proximity to facilities
- Energy use
- Labour market
We have developed a table that can be used to identify your Exposome Surface(s) of interest. For each Exposome Surface we provide information on the: time period, temporal resolution, spatial resolution, geographical coverage, and units in which exposure data is expressed. We also provide a reference to the original source of the data.
A detailed description of each of the Exposome Surfaces included in the table can be found here. Many of the Exposome Surfaces can be accessed directly through our online Exposome Dataplatform.
On this platform the available surfaces can also be visualized for the European Region of your interest. Access to surfaces that are not accessible through the platform can be requested on an ad-hoc basis. To learn how to request access to the Exposome Surfaces provided through our Exposome Maps tool, please read our Data access and Publication Policy and use the Request form to contact us. To learn how to work with the Exposome Data platform please read our Instruction Manual.
Disclaimer:
This is version 0.5 of the Exposome Maps tool. November 2023
Some surfaces are generated by the EXPANSE or Exposome-NL projects, some by other projects or agencies. For each exposome surfaces that is inventoried here we indicate who the rightful owner is and provide reference to the original source.
