Exposome short course series

Molecular Epidemiology of Chronic Disease and the Exposome

19-22 April 2022
Hybrid (Utrecht, the Netherlands & Online)

In 2022 Utrecht University, in collaboration with Imperial College London, will organise the Exposome short course series. The series is divided into three levels: exposome basis (April 2022, Utrecht), exposome advanced (June/July 2022, London) and exposome practice (tba).

Exposome basis

From 19-22 April 2022 the exposome basis course, titled Molecular Epidemiology of Chronic Disease and the Exposome, will be held in Utrecht. The aim of this course is to give students an introduction into internal exposome research. There is a specific emphasis on the use of molecular markers to characterize relationships with chronic diseases and exposures to environmental factors.

The course covers the following aspects:

  • Introduction to the platforms that are available for the analysis of molecular markers in epidemiological studies
  • Introduction to the considerations that are important when setting up a molecular epidemiological study
  • Introduction to the statistical methods available for the analysis of molecular epidemiological studies
  • Practical examples of molecular epidemiological studies.

These components are addressed in a series of lectures combined with a computer practical. Lectures are given by the coordinators of the course, supplemented by lectures by renowned national and international speakers. The computer lab is supervised by a team of local teachers. Background materials that cover theoretical aspects of molecular epidemiology will be provided. For a detailed overview of the course contents please see the course schedule.

Target audience and background

The target audience for this course are MSc and PhD students with an interest in Internal Exposome research and a background in epidemiology. Students and professionals from outside Utrecht University are welcome.

Computer labs will use the R statistical software. No experience on working with this software is required. Due to the international nature of the course, it is taught in English.

This will be a hybrid (online and at location in Utrecht, The Netherlands) course.

Registration fee

The registration fee for the course is 750 euros. Students affiliated to the Exposome-NL consortium and the EXPANSE project will qualify for a discounted fee.
